Project Instructions
Getting Started Polymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Condition 4 packages of Poppyseed clay. If it is difficult to condition this volume of clay at once, condition smaller pieces and then put them all together and roll them into a solid ball. Roll the ball into a long shape that is thick in the middle and tapered on each end.
Continue rolling the shape until it is 31" long, thick in the middle and tapered on each end. Lay a sheet of baking parchment in front of you to lay your design on. This way it is easier to pick up and move to a baking sheet and the parchment keeps the clay from getting shiny spots during baking. Roll one of the left end up into a loose spiral. Bring the right end around the top of the left side. Curve the right side around the bottom edge of the spiral and gently push the end of it to the side of the spiral. Refer to finished photos for placement.
Make a 9" piece that is tapered on each end.
Curl a loose spiral on the left end of the 9" piece. Nestle this piece inside the larger piece and gently secure them to each other with light finger pressure. Bake the large piece laying down on the baking parchment for at least 30 minutes.
From 3 ounces of the Poppy Seed clay form a domed shape. When the larger sculpture is completely cool, push its base into the dome to seat it securely. Bake the entire sculpture again standing up in its base for 30 minutes.
