Project Instructions
Polymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Roll the Latte clay into smooth sheets on the #1 setting on the Clay Conditioning Machine. Roll sheets of Poppy Seed and Bordeaux to a #3 setting. Cut each sheet of clay into strips about 2” wide. This will be the depth or length of the cane.
Begin with the background Latte and form the negative space inside the letter stroke. Wrap the Poppy Seed sheet around the negative space, forming the letter stroke
Begin filling in the negative space around the letter with strips of Latte clay, completing additional letter strokes or serifs as the desired letter style dictates.
Continue to fill the negative space around the letter until a uniform shape borders the letter such as a circle or oval.
Wrap a sheet of Poppy Seed around the cane as a border design.
For a scallop design, begin with a log of Latte about ½” diameter and 3-4” long. Wrap it with a sheet of Bordeaux clay and trim the ends to meet. Reduce the cane to about 8” and slice the log down the length.
Press the half-log pieces from step 7 around the letter cane, arranging them in a scallop all around. If necessary, make an additional log to complete the scallop all the way around.
Form a long snake of Latte about the diameter of the width between the scallops. Pinch the log into a triangle and press a length of the triangle between each scallop, all the way around the cane.
Make a sheet of Latte on the #2 setting of the clay conditioning machine and wrap around the cane. Make a sheet of Poppy Seed on the #2 setting on the clay conditioning machine and wrap around the Latte layer to complete the exterior border.
Slice a piece of the cane for a pendant. Burnish the slice between two pieces of paper to even the slice and remove any blade marks or finger prints.
Pierce a hole for a jump ring and bake according to the instructions above.
