Sculpey Soufflé™ Sutton Slice Earrings

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6
mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note that the
baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take
longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE
MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Make Light Midnight by mixing equal amounts of Igloo with Midnight.

NOTE: Texture mats and thin silicone molds are easy to fill with colorful clays and then transfer them to a solid color sheet to make a cool relief pattern. In this tutorial I used a rubber texture sheet. This worked out fine for the first impression, but the same outcome was difficult to repeat in subsequent projects. I learned that silicone material will deliver a more consistent outcome than rubber material.

Lay the texture mat texture side up.

You will need very small amounts of each Light Midnight, Concrete, Guava, Citron, and Midnight.

Pinch off very small amounts of each color and randomly press them into the texture designs.

Make sure you are creating enough of the patterned area to cut out the large shape twice.

Roll the clay to make sure it is fully pressed into the crevices.

Shave the excess off of the mat so that the clay only remains in the crevices.

Double check that all excess clay has been shaved away.

Sheet 1/4 bar of Igloo to 1/8” thick. Make sure this sheet is large enough to accommodate two of the large cutter shapes.

Press the Igloo sheet to the texture mat covering the area with the clay filling.

Carefully flip the sheet and mat over so that the mat is now on top of the clay.

This will be most helpful if you place the clay on something that it will stick to like a laminate countertop or sheet of glass.

Roll over the back of the mat with the Clay Roller.

With the clay sheet stuck down well, carefully peel the texture mat back at an acute angle so that the clay in the texture releases onto the clay sheet.

Cut out two large shapes.

Sheet Citron to 1/8” thick and cut out two small shapes.

Here’s the layout for the earrings.

Poke holes with the Blunt Point Tool for later connecting with jump rings.

Bake following the baking instructions for Sculpey Soufflé™.

Allow to cool completely before handling.

Assemble with jump rings using flat nose pliers to open and close the jump rings.

Glue posts to backs of earrings and allow glue to dry completely.
