Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6
mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic
surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note that the
baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take
longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE
MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Once your clay is conditioned you are going to want to roll out a flat slab, I used the Soufflé™ Ivory for my background. You can do this by lying two of the same thickness rulers side-by-side and using them as your guide to make sure your surface is even. Shoot for about a quarter of an inch thick. You don’t want to go too thin or it’ll be impossible to work with, so error on the side of thicker than thinner.

Step 3

I rolled out much thinner pieces of the other colors and simply started, color by color, laying in ripped pieces onto the Ivory. I started with one color and then moved onto the next, coming back around to each color 2-3 more times until I felt like the ivory was covered enough but still had a small bit showing. You can layer these or make them almost touch, depending on the look you like. I tore my pieces very very small since these earrings are tiny. I also liked the ripped edge look and tried not to worry about them being smooth on the edges.

Step 4

Once they are layered to your liking, take your roller and smoosh down by applying gentle pressure as you roll all the pieces until you are happy with the look and everything is attached to one another and nothing is loose.

Step 5

Now, its time to cut out our pieces! I selected my cutter and I pressed down firmly
and removed the cutter for a clean cut.

Step 6

Peel off the extra clay so you're left with only your final shape. Last, I used my knife tool to remove the center piece. You can either use a needle tool now to make your holes in the top center of each for assembly or drill them after baking if that is your preference.

Now it’s time to bake! Please follow the
directions in Step 1 above and allow the clay to cool after baking.

Step 7

Once the clay has cooled, it's time to assemble your jewelry! I laid out how I wanted them to look .

Step 8

Then I assembled all my pieces! And now they're ready to wear!

I hope you enjoy these fun earrings, the color combinations and shape possibilities are endless when you use this technique!
