Sculpey Premo™ Mustard on the Side Earrings

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Sheet Mustard Premo into a sheet not more than 1/8” thick using either the Acrylic Clay Roller or a pasta machine on the thickest setting. Pinch off little bits of Navy Premo from the sides of the bar and press them randomly over the sheet. This will look best if you try really hard to be random with the sizes and shapes.

Roll over the sheet with the Acrylic Clay Roller to make it level again so that all the little speckles are imbedded into the Mustard background.

Cut out two Irregular Oval Shapes using the largest cutter. In order to make the two shapes opposite mirror imaged, you will have to cut one from the front of the sheet then flip the sheet over - patterned side down - and cut one from the back of the sheet. Here’s how they look opposite mirrors of each other. Smooth all the cut edges with your fingertips.

Use the smallest cutter to cut the centers out of each of the large shapes. Again, you will need to flip one of the shapes over and cut from the back to create opposite mirror images. Smooth cut edges with your fingertips.

Sheet Navy through the pasta machine on the thickest setting or use the Acrylic Clay Roller to make a sheet that is not more than 1/8” thick. Use the medium cutter to cut out two opposite mirror image shapes. Smooth cut edges with your fingertips.

Cut the medium sized Navy pieces in half horizontally. For my design I used the bottom more pointed pieces. Smooth cut edges with your fingertips. Poke a hole at the top of the large mustard pieces and at the bottom of the Navy pieces so that you can connect them with jump rings after they are baked.

Bake the pieces following the baking instructions for Premo. When they are completely cool, connect the top and bottom pieces with jump rings using flat nose pliers. Glue ear posts to the backs of the top pieces and allow the glue to dry completely.
