Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking:

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Sheet 1 bar Vintage Teal Pearl through the pasta machine on the thickest setting or sheet with an Acrylic Clay Roller to 1/8” thick. Double this sheet by folding
it on itself and rolling it to seal.

Sheet 1/2 bar Copper through the pasta machine on the thickest setting or sheet with an Acrylic Clay Roller to 1/8” thick. Do not double, leave this sheet single
thickness.

Step 3

Burnish copper composite leaf to the Teal Pearl clay surface.

Burnish gold composite leaf to the Copper clay surface.

Step 4

Layer the Copper over the Teal Pearl and roll to seal the two clay sheets together.

Step 5

Chop the clays up into large pieces using the Rigid Clay Blade.

Step 6

Push the pieces toward each other so they stick together in at piles with no holes in it.

Step 7

With your hands begin forming the chopped pieces into the basic shape that you want your trinket dish to take.

Roll the top with the Acrylic Clay Roller to smooth it.

Step 8

Push around the edges with the side of the Rigid Blade to make the edges consistent.

Step 9

Use the 12 mm Ball Tool to form a groove around the edge of the tray making a lip.

Step 10

Spend some time smoothing the inside of the tray to a flat surface and to blend the groove into the sides and the bottom with your fingertips. This also helps to
smear the colors together slightly and to work the leaf in organically.

Smooth the outside edges to a taper making the sides of the tray look slightly melted.

Step 11

When you are happy with the look, bake the dish following the baking instruction for Sculpey Premo™.

Allow to cool completely before handling.
