Sculpey® III Lady Bug Back Pack Charm

Preheat oven to 275 °F. Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. Condition all clay by kneading until it’s soft and smooth or running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.

Condition half of the Pearl clay. Roll through Clay Conditioning Machine on #4, #1 being the thinnest setting.

If desired texture one side (see picture)…this will become the back of your piece. Lay on work surface.

Cut 2 wing slices from your angel wing cane. Lay them on the Pearl clay sheet as shown. (Instructions for the wing canes can be found in the “Angel Wing Cane” project)

Condition the Beige clay. Take a ½” ball of the mixture and roll into a small log. Place this between the 2 wings (as shown) and flatten slightly. This will be come your angel’s body.

Condition the rest of the Pearl clay. Roll through Clay Conditioning Machine on #4.

Cut a triangle about 2” across the bottom and about 3” tall from the clay sheet. Cut off the top of the triangle. This area will be the neck of the angel’s outfit…it should be about ½” across.

Carefully roll the edges in on both sides. Leave the middle area open.

Turn this piece over so the rolled sides are on the bottom. Place it over the “body” and attach at the sides. This should be touching the wings on both sides.

Roll a 5/8” ball of the Beige. Place it on top of the “neck” of the outfit and flatten slightly.

Now trim the excess clay around your angel using your cutting tool. I usually start by trimming around one wing and down the side of the outfit, then repeat on other side. Finally trim around the head and remove excess clay. Set aside for later.

Use your cutting tool to even up the bottom of the outfit. Be sure to seal any rough edges after cutting.

Curve the wingtips up.

Make 2 pea sized balls of the Beige clay. Pick up one of the balls and roll between your thumb and forefinger until it resembles a golf ball on a golf tee. Flatten the “ball” slightly. This will become the angel’s hand. Repeat with other ball.

Cut 2 sleeves from the Pearl sheet (about 1” long and wide enough to cover the “golf tee”). Lay one sleeve across each of the hands.

Pick up and roll between your thumb and forefinger until smooth. These are the angel’s sleeves.

Adjust the length if necessary, and then attach one to each side of the angel’s body. Bend at the elbow.

Mix a ½”ball of Gold clay with ½” ball of Pearl clay. Mix together until an even color is achieved. Roll this mix into a snake about ½” wide. Now roll it through the Clay Conditioning Machine (lengthwise). Place on work surface.

Cut a piece about 1/2” wide and 6” long from the resulting strip. Taper ends if desired. About ¾” in from each end pinch the sides together as shown.

To write “rejoice” on the banner, ink each letter stamp then stamp the clay. Be careful not to press too hard or you will get ink in places where you don’t want it. Practice makes perfect in this step…you may want to practice a few times to get the pressure right before stamping your actual banner. It helps to start with placing the letter “O” in the middles first so you can get your wording centered on the banner.

Now here is the hardest part. Pick up the banner being careful not to touch any of the ink…the ink will smear! Place the right pinched edge in the angel’s right hand and then the left side in the left hand. Press each hand onto the banner. Manipulate the middle of the banner (careful not to touch the ink) so it flows across the front of the angel outfit.

Use a pinch of clay for the nose. Use your u-shaped tool to make “laughing” eyes and a smiling mouth. **If this is going to be a boy angel you need to add ears at this point…roll 2 small balls of clay (about 1/4'” each) into small logs. Attach one to each side of the head and press into place** (A girl angel will have long hair that would cover where the ears are anyway so you don’t need to put on ears).

Roll 3 skinny snakes of Gold. Drape the first at the top of the head, between the shoulders. This will give a base for the other two pieces of hair.

Now drape the other 2 pieces around the head.

Roll a ½” ball of Glow-in-the-Dark into a skinny snake. Wrap around head pinching it off at the edges (see picture). **If this will be an ornament add a jumpring to the top of the angel’s head before baking**

Bake angel at 275 °F for 1 hr. Let cool and hang.

If this is to be a pin or magnet attach pinback or magnet, after the piece has cooled, with super glue.
