Project Instructions
Your workspace:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.
Getting Started:
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. Condition the Translucent clay while adding small amounts of the Brilliant Gold Pearl Ex powder a little at a time. If you add too much powder at once you can end up with a mess. Continue adding powder until you achieve a nice solid color. Roll out a sheet on the #2 setting on the clay conditioning machine and cut out four 1†squares.
Next condition some of the Gold clay, roll out a sheet on a #3 setting on the clay conditioning machine and cut out four 3/8†squares. Pick up a 3/8†square and position it into the center of a 1†square so it is on the diagonal. Continue this process with the three remaining sets of squares. Use your tweezers to pick up a 3 mm hot fix crystal and place it into the center of the 3/8†square; press gently into the surface of the clay and repeat with the remaining three squares. Position the squares onto the 1†size domed form of the Hollow Bead Maker and make sure you have all of the edges pressed down against the form. Bake the squares directly on the Hollow Bead Maker for 15 minutes and let cool completely. Because you are making 4 squares you will have to do two rounds of baking.
Roll eight 3/16†balls out of the lighter Gold clay you created in Step 1. Pick up one of the domed squares and hold it so the underside of the dome is facing up. Dab a tiny bit of Bake N’ Bond on each corner and place a ball on each corner so it is sticking out about half way over the edge of the domed piece. Pick up another one of the domed squares, dab a little Bake N’ Bond onto the inside of each corner like you did on the last one. Turn the dome over and press it so the corners push into the balls you put on the first dome sandwiching the balls between the corners of the two domes. Use your Super Slicer to trim away any clay that has squeezed out of the sides. Repeat this process with the two remaining domed squares. Place both pieces onto a piece of fiberfill, bake for 15 minutes, and let cool completely.
Roll out a thin sheet of Gold clay and cut out eight 1/8†circles. Pick up one circle and place it so it is centered over the corner of one of the beads. Gently press it around the corner so it conforms to the 90 degree bend. Repeat this on the other three corners. Pick up your needle tool and poke a small hole into the top of one of the corners, this mark gives a place to start drilling the small hole later. Turn the bead 180 degrees and poke another small hole so that the earring will hang on a diagonal. Repeat this process with the second bead, place them both onto the fiberfill, bake for 15 minutes, and let cool completely. Once the beads have cooled use the small pin drill to drill holes, this doesn’t require much work since the clay will drill quite easily. Once you have drilled the holes check to make sure they are the correct size by inserting a headpin
Insert some Gold clay into the Extruder and use the die with multiple small holes to extrude lots of thin strands that are a little over 1†long. On one side of a bead rub a thin layer of Bake n’ Bond close to the edges on the surface of the square. Pick up a strand of the Gold clay and place it along the edge of the top of the square and trim the ends flush with the outside of the square. Repeat this so all four edges are bordered with a thin strand. Repeat this on the other bead, bake on the fiberfill for 15 minutes, and let cool completely. Once the beads have cooled repeat on the other side of the beads, bake again for 15 minutes, and let cool completely.
Roll out another thin sheet of Gold and cut sixteen 1/8†circles. Pick up one of the beads and position a 1/8†circle so it is on the corner on top of where the thin strands meet. Gently pinch the circle on the corner so it is a teardrop shape with the point matching up with the corner of the bead. Pick up the ball stylus and dip the tip into the jar of Brilliant Gold Pearl Ex, tap off the excess powder and gently press the ball into the center of the teardrop piece of clay you just added to the corner. Repeat this on the three remaining corners and the other bead, bake for 15 minutes on the fiberfill and let cool completely. Once the beads have cooled repeat on the other side of the beads, bake again for 15 minutes, and let cool completely.
To finish the earrings pick up one of the headpins, add a 4mm bi-cone crystal, slide the clay bead onto the pin, and add another crystal. Use the round nose pliers to bend a loop at the top of the headpin and trim off the extra wire of the headpin using the small wire cutters. Attach the ear wire and repeat with the other beads.
