Project Instructions
Getting StartedPolymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Roll about 1/2 a block of Sculpey Souffle Poppy Seed out on the medium setting on your Clay Conditioning Machine. Place it on a small smooth tile (or smooth worksurface). Lightly spray your selected texture with water and emboss the texture into the sheet of clay using an acrylic roller
Select the area you want to cut the first image out and place the Sculpey template over that area (we are using the sheet, not the piece that you pop out of the template!) Press the template lightly into place and use the craft knife to trace a cut around the edge of the selected shape. NOTE: I find that if I hold the craft knife lightly, I'm more able to follow the template outline vs. me trying to "drive" the craft knife around the shape.
Cut out as many shapes as you can from the sheet of textured clay. Make at least 5 of the patterns as shown. I like to use the intersections of the textures in the areas I select. Use the small circle cutter to cut out at least 5 circles.
Use your Super Slicer to help remove the pieces from the smooth tile! Place the pieces on a sheet of clean paper and place on your baking surface. Bake according to the directions above.
Once the pieces have baked and cooled, paint the entire surface with the white paint (I like to use my empty clay wrapper as a small paint palette). Quickly wipe the top surfaces of the texture with the damp paper towel to remove the paint from the upper surfaces.
Allow the pieces to dry and glue into place!
You can also use a little bit of Souffle Cherry Pie to cut out different colored circles! Or use Souffle Concrete color for a more grey tone
