Getting StartedPolymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Blend 3 oz. of Premo Turquoise and 1/8 oz. Premo Wasabi to create a greener shade of Turquoise. Roll the clay on the # 3 setting of the Sculpey conditioning machine.
Mist the Sculpey “Landscape” texture sheet with water then press it onto the blended clay which should be slightly larger than necessary to cover your metal cuff. Remove the texture sheet and repeat the pattern to fill the clay with the design.
Draw a pattern to fit your metal bracelet blank allowing .25” solid margin on all edges (represented in black). Copy and enlarge the design to create the bracelet in this project or search Google for alternate designs.
Craft Knife Users - If you will be cutting your clay with a craft knife, print the design on card stock then cut out the design to create a stencil. Place your clay on a flexible cutting mat. Lay your stencil on the clay and cut the design with the craft knife. Pressing down too hard on the card stock may distort the clay texture. Remove the stencil and cover the clay with a piece of plastic. Flip it over and peel off the cutting mat. Cover the wrong side of the clay with a clean piece of plastic and flip it right side up on your work surface.
Curio Users – Lay out the design in your Silhouette software, sizing it appropriately. Place the textured clay right side up on the shiny side of freezer paper. Position the paper on your Curio cutting mat with four platforms. Unscrew the red cap from the Deep Cut Blade and turn it to the red, #20 setting. Leave the red cap off while cutting the clay. In the software cut settings chose Thick Fabric Like Canvas, Ratchet Blade 10, Speed 3, and Thickness 20. Send the job to the Curio machine to cut. Once cut, cover the clay with bakers plastic. Flip the clay over and peel off the freezer paper. Cover the wrong side with bakers paper. Flip the clay right side up on your work surface.
Remove the plastic from the right side of the clay. With your fingernail, push up on the pieces to be removed from the backside. The plastic will stretch slightly and allow the elements to easily dislodge from the rest of the design.
When all the pieces have been removed do not move the clay from the plastic. As you can see, some of the pieces are not connected to other clay parts. Keep them in position on the plastic to maintain their alignment within the design.
Use a large Etch N’ Pearl tool to cut rounded “studs” to place in the center and to the sides of the design. With your finger, dab Antique Gold Mica Powder on the surface of the studs.
Place a clean piece of bakers plastic on the right side of the clay. Flip it over and carefully peel the plastic away from the wrong side. Center the bracelet blank on the clay, positioning it evenly from the ends. Use the plastic to pull the clay onto the blank and press it in place.
Once the clay is positioned on the blank, remove the plastic. Use sculpting tools to correct any minor flaws created during handling. Run a tissue blade along all the metal edges to align the clay with the blank and cut away excess
Bake according to the directions in Step 1. Set the baked cuff in ice water until it cools completely
Mix one part Gold Paint with one part black paint. Use a small brush to apply the paint to the recessed areas of the clay.
Keep a damp foam brush handy to drag across the clay to remove paint on the surface areas. Rinse it after each pass. Hold the tool perpendicular to the clay and do not press on the foam as it may remove paint from recesses
When the paint is dry, sand all but the studs with 600, 800, then 1000 grit wet/dry. Buff the clay. Apply a light spray of Glosscote on the studs to protect the powder. To avoid spraying the rest of the cuff, punch a hole in a piece of paper and hold it over each stud while spraying.
