Premo Sculpey® Easy Terrazzo Vase

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. BAKING SHOULD BE DONE BY AN ADULT.

For the background color we will need the whole bar of Beige and 1/2 bar of White. Slice off just a little piece of the Beige (not more than 1/16 bar) and an equal size piece of the White and set these aside. Mix the remainder of the Beige and 1/2 bar of White together completely to make a light Beige color. Use either the pasta machine or the Acrylic Clay Roller to make an even sheet about 1/8” thick.

Check the sheet to make sure it will reach all the way around the outside of the glass vase. Remove the clay sheet from the vase and place it on a piece of paper so that it is easy to move around.

Place the small piece of White that you set aside in Step 2 on a small piece of paper. Chop the White up into little bits with the Super Slicer.

Sprinkle the White bits all over the background color sheet randomly.

Place the small piece of Beige that you set aside in Step 2 on a small piece of paper. Chop the Beige up into little bits with the Super Slicer.

Sprinkle the Beige bits all over the background color sheet randomly.

Place a small piece of Gray Granite on a small piece of paper. Chop the Gray Granite up into little bits with the Super Slicer. Sprinkle the Gray Granite bits all over the background color sheet randomly.

Place a small piece of Spanish Olive on a small piece of paper. Chop the Spanish Olive up into little bits with the Super Slicer. Sprinkle the Spanish Olive bits all over the background color sheet randomly.

Place a small piece of Alizarin Crimson on a small piece of paper. Chop the Alizarin Crimson up into little bits with the Super Slicer. Sprinkle the Alizarin Crimson bits all over the background color sheet randomly. Press the bits into the background sheet with fingertip pressure so that they are stuck down really well. Use the Acrylic Clay Roller to roll over the sheet embedding the bits into the background sheet.

Trim a straight edge along one of the short ends of the clay sheet. Start at one corner of the vase and carefully wrap the sheet around until it touches the starting point. Trim the clay sheet so that the beginning and the end butt into each other making a nice flat seam. Smooth the seam with your fingertips. Smooth each flat side of the vase pressing air bubbles out from between the clay and the glass and moving them to the edges so they can escape. Trim the top and the bottom edges removing excess clay with the Super Slicer. Carefully smooth cut edges with your fingertips so they look nice and neat.

Bake the vase following the baking instructions for Premo in Step 1 above. Allow to cool completely before handling.
