Project Instructions
Polymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275 °F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult. Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the clay dedicated pasta machine several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Make a blend with equal parts of white and ecru clay, running it on the thickest setting of your clay condition machine, until it is uniformly blended. I recommend to split the amount of clay in two parts for easy handling.
Using your Super Slicer, cut your sheets of clay in smaller pieces. With your Sculpey Texture Wheel and your Sculpey Technique Design Blocks of your choice give texture to the clay as shown. Use water or cornstarch as release agent for your Technique Design Blocks, press firmly into the sheet of clay and pull off very carefully.
With your rectangular cutter cut out a couple of tiles, than estimate how many tiles you will need to fill the space of your stone. Save your scraps.
Cover the surface of your stone uniformly with Sculpey Bake&Bond. Gently place the textured tiles on your stone, pressing them carefully into the Bake&Bond.
For your Fairy Flowers, cut out 4, 3 and two times 2 ½ rectangles out of your sheet of clay. Make a ball of each quantity and mold like shown in the picture. Give texture with your Needle Tool.
For the leaves mold tiny clay balls, mold a teardrop shape, flatten with your finger and design the leave with the Needle Tool.Cut out four stars, give them texture with rough Sandpaper.Make 6 small clay snakes, twisting them together, preparing the embellishment for one Fairy.Mold some more clay balls, teardrops and leaves to embellish the other ones.Make four Art Doll Faces, pressing a small ball of clay into your Push Mold and pull it out carefully.
Assemble all pieces like shown in the picture, put some Bake&Bond to adhere your embellishments onto the tiles. Use your Style and Detail Tools to give texture.Do not put yet the stars and the coiled snakes, it is more easy to paint without them.
Take a blade or kitchen knife, scrape off your pastel sticks some powder. With a Makeup Applicator, Ear Cleaner, Paint Brush or your fingers you may now paint the embellishments of your stone with the colors of your choice. After painting assemble the stars and the coiled snakes, putting a drop of Bake&Bond on the back to adhere better, paint them now.Optional you can give now some highlights with Mica Powders. Dip brush or finger into the powder, tap off the excess and applicate.
Bake your embellished stone following instructions above. After curing let it cool completely.
Give the tiles of your piece a wash with white Acrylic Paint and immediately wipe off the excess paint. The Makeup Applicator, slightly humid, makes a great tool to remove paint out of the small corners. Let dry completely.
Step 12To protect your piece apply Sculpey Satin or Gloss Glaze.
