Project Instructions
Getting Started Polymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult. Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Mix the Pearl and Ultramarine clays together in a 10 part Pearl to 1 part Ultramarine combination (using a cutter to cut out 10 pieces of Pearl and 1 of Ultramarine is the easiest way to measure) on the number two setting of the Sculpey Conditioning Machine. Use an acrylic roller to impress half of the clay with the lace fabric.
Mist a die cut wooden design with water to prevent it from sticking and press it onto the clay.
With a craft knife, cut around the clay design 1/8” from the outline. Poke four holes in the circle ends with an Etch ’N Pearl tool. The holes should be big enough to hold the prongs of the brad.
Impress more clay with the fabric. Cover it with bakers plastic. Cut out four ovals measuring 1.25” x 2”.
Loosely fold the ovals in half. Use the round end of the Etch ’N Pearl tool to make a matching hole in each layer. Carefully pull the two layers apart. Slip several sheets of card stock or old business cards about .25” thick between the layers. Cure all the clay for 30 minutes in a 275 degree oven.
Make a wash with black acrylic paint and brush the cooled clay. Dab at the surface with a damp cloth to reveal the clay color, leaving the paint in the crevices. Allow it to dry.
Apply Sculpey Gloss Glaze onto the pieces with a brush.
The Fabric - Cut one bag piece from black vinyl to measure 12” x 22”. Cut two strap pieces to measure 2.50” x 15”. Cut two lining pieces to measure 12” x 18”. Cut heavy mat board to measure 8.50” x 2”.
Fold the vinyl in half with right sides together. Clip the edges to hold them in place as you sew .50” seams on both long sides.
Flatten the bottom corners with the center bottom matching the side seam. Place a ruler across the resulting triangle with one inch on each side of the seam center. Draw a line across the ruler. Stitch across the ruler line.
Stitch the lining pieces together across the 12” width with a .50” seam allowance. Leave the center ten inches of the seam open. This will be the lining bottom. Sew the bag lining following steps 11 through 13.
With right sides together sew the top edge of the vinyl with the lining.
Pull the vinyl through the opening in the lining bottom to bring both layers right side out.
Assembly - With painters tape, center the clay design on the front of the vinyl. Use a sharp tool to poke holes for the brads in the clay circles. Insert your hand through the lining and bend the brad prongs in place on the backside. Repeat for all four circles.
Fold the strap pieces in half lengthwise with wrong sides together and sew fancy topstitching close to the folded edge. Repeat the stitching on the raw edge.
Slip the ends of the straps into the metal rectangles. Fold the vinyl over .50” and sew in place with fancy stitching.
Push the lining into the bag with wrong sides together. Turn in the top vinyl edge inside to create the 1.50” facing. Apply a fancy stitch around the top of the bag through both vinyl layers.
Insert the clay strap holders into the metal rectangles and position them 2” from the side seams. Use a sharp tool to poke a hole in the vinyl to match the holes in the clay layers. Remove the tool and insert the brads. Bend the prongs in place
Place the mat board in the bottom of the bag under the lining. Hand or machine stitch the lining center seam. Push the lining corners into the bottom of the bag.
Run a thick black Sharpie against the cut edges of the straps to color the vinyl’s light backing material.
