Original Sculpey® Terra Cotta Bear

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Roll a 1” ball for the bear’s head, set aside
Roll approximately a 1-3/4” ball for the bear’s body
Roll two 1/4” balls for the ears.
Roll two 1/2” sized balls for the arms.
Roll two 3/4” sized balls for the legs.

Shape the head into a little bit more of a horizontal oval shape. With your fingers form a small nose in the center.

Flatten the two ear balls slightly and attach them to the top of the head on either side. Marry the seams of the clay with your fingertips or the side end of your paintbrush. Smooth. Use the end of your paintbrush to create round indents in the ears.

Roll the body into a vertical oval round shape. Attach the head, once again marrying the seams together with your fingers and the side end of your paintbrush.

Roll the two 1/2” sized balls into long oval shapes for the arms. Attach these on either side of the body and marry the seams around the shoulder area.

Lastly roll the two 3/4” sized balls into long oval shapes for the legs. Bend up one end of each to make the feet and flatten the bottoms. Attach the legs to the side of the body so that the bear is sitting down.

Smooth areas. Once you are happy with your bear place him on your baking tile and bake according to package directions. Allow to cool completely.

Paint the nose and belly of your bear with White acrylic paints. You may need two coats.

Paint the inside of the bear’s ears pink and the bottoms of his feet pink.

Paint a cute nose and happy mouth in Black paint. Give him two Black eyes with eyebrows. Add a White dot to each eye.

Paint a small Red heart on the right side of his chest.
