Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note that the baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Roll out a flat slab of your conditioned clay. You can do this by lying two of the same thickness rulers side-by-side and using them as your guide to make sure your surface is even. Shoot for about a quarter of an inch thick. You don’t want to go too thin or it’ll be impossible to work with, so ere on the side of thicker than thinner.

Step 3

It's time to create your texture. Grab your texture mat and lay it on top of the clay slab. I give it a little press-in by hand and then use the roller to really press it in. You may have to do it a few times, reworking your clay in between to get the slab flat again, until you have the desired amount of texture and a clear image.

Clay is SO forgiving and you can rework it 1000 times if you need to, so don’t be afraid - go for it! NOTE: You can also lightly spray your texture with water if the clay is tending to stick to it.

Step 4

Use the round cutter to cut out your bowl shape. My texture size was 2.75-inches and the design was about 2 inches wide, so I used an 2.5-inch circle cutter as I wanted the full bowl textured. Gently use your blade to sweep under your textured circle to lift it off the tile.

Step 5

Lightly drop the circle of clay into your selected bowl and gently press the clay so that it sits inside the bowl and takes its shape.

Step 6

I wanted to add a scalloped edge, so I used a small tool to push into between the bowl and the clay until I had the edges the way I liked. They held their shape just fine while baking!

Bake the clay in the bowl according to the directions in Step 1 above.

Step 7

Once the clay has baked and cooled, gently work it out of the bowl you baked it in.

I chose to add a coating of glaze onto the bowl and spread it around evenly. I let it dry for 24 hours and voila! Your bowl is ready to use.

Step 8

Here is a look at my finished bowl. It fits my rings perfectly! But you can create a bowl as large as you would like. I hope you create a lovely piece for your home and maybe even give one as a gift this holiday season! I hope this project brings you lot of joy as you create it and a lot of beauty each day as you use it to get ready.
