Product Instruction

Baking

Sculpey III® polymer clay is safe to bake in a toaster oven or your home oven. Always check the packaging for baking instructions. For Sculpey III®, bake at 275° F (130° C) for 15 minutes per 1/4 in (6 mm) thickness.

Sealing and Finishing

When properly baked, Sculpey III® and other Sculpey® clay brands are nonporous, waterproof and durable — that means you don't have to seal them. However, if you do want to produce a professional shine or finish, use a polymer clay medium that's best for your project.

Try to avoid clear nail polish as this can make your project soft and sticky and break down the polymer clay's bonds.

Storing

Proper polymer clay storage is crucial to ensuring its freshness. Store your leftover Sculpey III® in a clay-compatible container in a dry, cool place. You can store polymer clay at low temperatures with no ill effects on the clay's properties — freezing or refrigeration can even extend the clay's shelf life.

We recommend bags or containers made of polypropylene (PP) plastic — always look for the recycling symbol #5 on the bottom of the container. Do not store polymer clay:

  • In direct sunlight.
  • Inside a car.
  • In a hot environment above 77 degrees Fahrenheit.

The clay may become partially cured in the summer months if your house is in a hot climate and not air-conditioned.

Cleaning

The best way to clean your tools, work surfaces and hands after working with polymer clay is to use baby wipes. Follow up with soap and water.

To protect your work surface from staining, we suggest using the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat. This is an excellent choice because it protects your work surface while allowing you to bake your clay creations right on it.

Why is it important to protect your work surface? Many modeling clays contain ingredients that may damage or stain finished surfaces. Do not place your unbaked Sculpey III® multipack clays on fabric, carpeting, flooring, plastic or furniture. Alternatives to using the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat include a metal or glass surface, wax paper or disposable foils.
