Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area
appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

 Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best
results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an
index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per
1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or
ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note
that the baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces
take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO
NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Roll out one snake of each color, 5 total about 3 inches long. I used Premo Purple, Soufflé Raspberry, Soufflé Guava, Premo Carnation, and Soufflé Ivory.

Step 3

Combine snakes, and twist to create a marbled pattern. Twist and fold until you have
bands of color that you like.

Step 4

Roll out your marbled clay onto a textured mat. Make sure to press firmly so the clay gets into all the grooves.

Step 5

Use a tissue blade, keep it as flat as possible and cut off all excess clay.

Step 6

You can repeat steps 4 & 5 until you have enough clay in the grooves of the
textured mat. You don’t want any excess clay on the flat parts of the mat.

Step 7

Place the mat textured side down onto a sheet of Premo Carnation. My sheet of clay is about 1/16th inch thick. Press down firmly, all over the mat to transfer the pattern
onto this clay.

Step 8

Use both hands to slowly and carefully peel back the mat. If the clay is stuck in the
grooves simply press the mat back down and peel off again slowly until it comes
loose. This step can take some patience, but the results pay off!

Step 9

Cut out an arch shape. I used a hand drawn cardstock template and craft knife but you can use clay cutters if you have them. I also trimmed off the edges of the
carnation clay and saved it for another project.

Step 10

Poke holes at the top and bottom of your arches with a needle tool. Or drill holes after baking which is my preference. Bake your clay at 275 degrees for 30 mins.

Step 11

Use 4 (7mm) jump rings total to connect your pieces together.

Step 12

Congratulations!
Now you’ve made a unique pair of earrings. Try different textured mats for more
results.
