Project Instructions
- Getting Started:
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.
- Baking:
From Original Sculpey® Granite make a ball about 1.5” in diameter. Push the ball down on the work surface to make the bottom flat and the top curved like a dome. Make a proportionately sized ball for the head and four little balls for feet. Set these parts aside for now.
From 1/16 block of each Teal, Navy Metallic, and Granny Smith make little logs. Stack the logs together as shown.
Roll and twist the colors together to make a striped rope.
Roll the rope until it is long and skinny and still about 3/16” thick. Coil the rope up into a nautilus shape.
Wad the shape up into a ball.
Roll the clay into a smooth ball.
Flatten the ball into a pancake and drape it over the dome of Granite colored clay. Roll a long rope of Granite and wrap it around the edge of the colorful shell. Trim the end and smooth the seam with your fingertips.
Press the head onto the front of the shell. Add the four feet around the outside of the shell. Pinch off a little more Granite to make a pointed tail.
Poke two eye sockets in the sides of the head with the Pointed Tool. Fill the eye sockets with little balls of Navy Metallic clay.
For the mouth, push the Scoop Tool straight into the front of the face and gently pull it down. Then use the sides of the tool to curve the sides of the mouth up into a smile. Bake the turtle following the baking instructions for Sculpey®III. Allow to cool completely before handling.
