Spotlight a favorite photo with a touch of dazzling glam with this wonderful use of mirror mosaic on a simple wooden frame. Project Instructions

Step 1

Liquid Bakeable Medium:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured Liquid Bakable Medium may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Getting Started:

- Wash hands after use (we have found that baby wipes work best).

Baking (also called curing):

-It is important to use oven thermometer when you bake the liquids so that you can ensure your oven is at the correct temperature.

-Do not microwave the liquids. They must be baked in a Preheated oven at 275 ºF (130 ºC) for liquid colors and 300 ºF (149 ºC) for Clear – Do not exceed baking temperatures.

-If your piece is less than 1/4” bake for 15 minutes. For thicker pieces that are 1/4” or above bake for 30 minutes.

-If your liquid project has become yellowed or discolored in the oven, when you remake it, tent it by placing either – folding an index card in half and placing your project under it by using aluminum foil over your project.

Step 2

Paint the back and edges of the wood frame (ifdesired) with gold acrylic paint to
hide the uncovered edges and back. Allow paint to dry completely.

On the front surface of the frame apply a bead of Gold Liquid Sculpey® (LS) as shown in photo.

Step 3

Spread the Gold LS with a tool or your fingertip to spread it evenly over the surface of the wood frame. Set the frame aside for a while. The LS will best soak into the frame if you can allow it to sit overnight. This will make the LS more tacky on the surface of the wood which is easier to work with and easier to move the tiles into place than if the LS is wet.

Step 4

I let my frame sit overnight so now the LS on the surface has seeped into the wood
some and is more tacky than wet.

Step 5

Please be careful when handling the mirror tiles. They are real glass and can have
very sharp edges.

Practice peeling the mirror tiles. They are easy to flex and bend and will be most
easily applied to the frame in connected rows rather than individually. The
seams between the rows of tiles can be cut with scissors through the self-
adhesive backing if they are bent apart.

Step 6

Starting in the corners, peel away the paper backing and place one singular tile. My wood frame has curved edges so I positioned the corner tile to just touch the
rounded corner leaving extra space evenly on two sides.

Cut strips of two tiles and of three tiles, or you can cut a strip of “L” shaped
tiles to surround the single tile in the corner. Peel away the paper backing
and leave a gap between the single tile and the “L” shape where the Gold LS can
show through. This “L” shape almost touches the inner corner.

Step 7

Cut and distribute rows of three tiles to go along each long side. This is most easily done if you cut and lay the rows of tiles (with the paper backing still in
place) along the side of the frame on the work surface. That way you can gauge
how much space will be left between each row of tiles before actually applying
them to the frame.

Once you are happy with your spacing, carefully remove the paper backing to expose the adhesive back and apply the tiles in rows with even spacing between. You can use the side of a Clay Blade or other straight edge as a guide for making
sure the tiles are applied in straight lines.

Step 8

Repeat for the second long side.

Step 9

Finally repeat Step 7 to fill in the short sides of the frame. Again, I laid my tiles
alongside the top and bottom on my work surface to get a visual of the spacing
between the rows before peeling the adhesive backing and applying them directly
to the frame.

Step 10

Bake/cure the frame with the tiles on it following the baking instructions for Liquid
Sculpey®. Allow to cool completely before handling.

Step 11

Go back in with the Gold LS and apply thin beads between the rows of mirror tiles.

Step 12

Do not overfill. Use a Needle Tool to help distribute the LS all the way up to the
edges of the tiles. This is a tedious process so slow down and enjoy making the
frame look its best.

Step 13

If you can let the frame set again for a few hours (or overnight), this is best. You
can clean up the surface of the tiles with a cotton swab dampened with rubbing
alcohol very carefully.

Step 14

Bake the frame one more time following the baking instructions for Liquid Sculpey®
to set the final LS application. Allow to cool completely before handling.
Tiles can be cleaned up again after baking with rubbing alcohol on a paper
towel pad.
