Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together.  Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F(130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such as metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) of thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Sheet Black to 1/16” thick with the Roller large enough to accommodate a round silk screen from the silk screen set.

Burnish the glossy or slick side of the screen to the surface of the clay with
fingertips.

Step 3

Squirt a bead of paint across the top of the screen image.

Step 4

Use the squeegee to drag the paint across the screen.

Step 5

Peel back the screen.

Immediately place the screen and the squeegee in a basin of water so the paint will not dry on it. When you are all finished, don’t forget to thoroughly clean the screen and squeegee and allow them to dry completely before storing.

Step 6

Allow the paint to dry on the clay completely while we work on the other areas.

Step 7

Roll White to a flat sheet 1/8” thick using the Roller. Make sure the piece of clay
is large enough to accommodate two of the cutter shapes.

Step 8

Cut out two of the cutter shapes from the clay.

Smooth the edges of the cut shapes with fingertips.

Step 9

Cut away the top of the shapes squarely with a Blade.

Step 10

Cut out one cutter shape from the silkscreened Black clay.

Step 11

Cut the Black clay shape in half.

Step 12

Remove about 1/8” of the Black clay from each half.

Step 13

Position the Black pieces on top of the White pieces with the straight edges lined up
across the tops.

Step 14

Roll tiny balls of White and pick up and place then on the White areas with the
Small Etch ‘n Pearl. When de-pressing the little balls onto the clay with the
small Etch ‘n Pearl, it’s useful to use a twisting motion as you release. This
may take a little practice. If you need to, practice on some scrap clay before
going to your project.

Step 15

Continue placing the small balls on top until the White areas are full.

Step 16

Stipple tiny dots in between the balls with the tip of an Etch ‘n Pearl.

Poke holes through the tops for jump ring placement with an Etch ‘n Pearl or the
Needle Tool.

Bake/cure the pieces following the baking instructions for Sculpey Premo™.

Allow to
cool completely before handling.

Step 17

Paint the Black areas with Sculpey Glossy Glaze. Allow to dry completely.

Step 18

Layout the earrings for assembly.

Step 19

Use flat nose pliers to open and close jump rings connecting the clay pieces to the
metal ball toppers.

Don’t forget to clean the silk screen and squeegee with water and allow to dry
completely before storing!
