Sculpey Premo™ Galaxy Glitter Print Earrings

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Begin by conditioning the Galaxy Glitter through a clay conditioning machine, around 15-20 times for the best results to avoid air bubbles during baking. Roll out your final slab and use the blade to sharpen the edges to create a completely usable piece of clay slab. Condition all of the colors you are going to use for on top of the slab. For this project roll out the top colors with a roller to a point where it is super thin about 2-3mm.

With each color, use shape cutters to cut out small and medium leaf shapes (if you don’t have this shape cutter you could always use the X-acto knife to cut the shapes). Once the leaves are cut, use the X-acto knife to cut triangles form each side for an organic leaf appearance.

Once all leaves are done, use your fingers or an X-acto knife to place the leaves onto the slab however you like. Remember not to have them too close to one another though, or when you roll the slab out, the leaves will touch. When all are placed onto the slab, lightly roll over the slab to stick down all the leaves and to create a flat surface once again.

Using the etch and pearll, detail the leaves. On this slab, I have dragged the stick along half of the leaves to appear natural and dotted the other side.

When you are satisfied with the detailing you have created on top, select the shape cutters you want for the earrings and place them on top and cut out your earring shapes. For this tutorial I have used the Sculpey® metal circle cutters for the top studs and “Blackbird and Violet” cutters for the bottoms.

Bake your clay following the instructions in Step 1. Once baked, lightly sand these pieces using a Dremel with a sanding attachment and drill the holes with the Dremel as well.

Using pliers, attach the jump rings and glue on the earring posts. Once the glue has dried your new beautiful sparkly earrings are perfect to wear for any occasion.
