Project Instructions
Getting Started:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.
Baking:
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.
For this project you can use an existing cane you have from a different project, or create a new cane. When you have decided on the can you are going to use. Reduce your cane if necessary to 1.25” X 1.25”. If the end of your cane is rough, slice off the rough face so that you have a nice face to begin with. Take a 1/8” slice off of your cane. Gently roll over the face of the cane slice with the Sculpey® Acrylic Clay Roller to smooth it and to make sure your slice is very even.
Pinch the corners gently to pull them out and lengthen them.
Bend each corner back toward the middle. Touch them down so they stick.
Form a little ball from scrap clay that will cover the center area.
Take a thin slice from a small Jelly Roll or other cane that you used in your Kaleidoscope Cane. Form it over the top side of the little scrap clay ball.
Form the Kaleidoscope clay slice over the 2nd largest dome of the Hollow Bead Maker. Push a divot in the middle with the 6mm ball tool.
Put a small dot of Translucent Liquid Sculpey in the divot.
Set the ball in the center.
Poke a hole with the needle tool in both the top and bottom of the fob in a location that will be complimentary to the cane slice. Bake on the Hollow Bead Maker and as directed above. When the piece is completely cool you are ready to assemble into a key chain fob.
Assembly:
1.Cut off 4” of aluminum wire. Curl one end into an eye with the round pliers.
2.Thread the wire through the top hole in the fob.
3.Place crystal beads as desired onto the wire. Thread the end of the wire through the bottom hole.
4.Trim the wire back to about 5/8”. Curl up the end into an eye with the round pliers.
5.Attach jump rings to each eye.
6.Attach a split key ring to the top jump ring.
7.Using the remainder of the wire, curl an eye into one end with round pliers. String a large crystal bead onto the wire. Trim the opposite end to about 5/8”. Curl up another eye snug to the bead. Attach to the bottom jump ring and enjoy!
