Practicing good technique is important to creating accurate canes. Once you have mastered making simple canes with good technique, you will be able to combine your simple canes together to create more complex ones.

Getting Started:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.
Baking:
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Designer’s Note - In this instruction we are starting with a Three Color Skinner Blend Sheet of Cadmium Yellow, Pink Fluorescent, and Turquoise. Complete instructions are available on the Sculpey Website.Make a Three Color Skinner Blend sheet on the thickest setting of the Sculpey Clay Conditioning Machine (1/8”). Fold the sheet in half matching like colors to like colors. Gently roll over the sheet with the Sculpey® Acrylic Clay Roller to smooth together and push out air bubbles.
Sheet White and Translucent through the Sculpey® Clay Conditioning Machine on the thickest setting (1/8”). Make the White and Translucent sheets similar in size to the blended sheet.
Layer the White and the Translucent together and press them through the Sculpey® Clay Conditioning Machine on the thickest setting. Press the folded blended sheet through the Sculpey® Clay Conditioning Machine on the thickest setting putting a narrow end through first. Layer the White/Translucent sheet on top of the blended sheet with the Translucent in the middle. Press all through the Sculpey® Clay Conditioning Machine on the thickest setting putting a narrow end through first. Trim the ends.
Roll a log of Purple to 1/4” thick and as long as the stacked sheet is wide. Place the Purple log across the pink trimmed end.
Roll the Purple up in the stacked sheet completely forming a Jelly Roll Cane. Squeeze the cane gently to make it solid and remove air bubbles. Roll a few times on the work surface to smooth the seam.
Lay the cane on it’s side. Using a blunt tool such as the Sculpey® Wood Wedge, press a line into the side of the cane.
After this initial line, switch to a more pointed tool like the Sculpey large Etch ‘N Pearl. Press several passes going all the way down into the center. You will want to stop pressing the line in once you reach the pink or the purple in the center. I usually only go to the pink area not all the way into the purple in the center. Squeeze the line back together.
Flip the log over and repeat steps 6 and 7 exactly opposite the first line.
You now have lines scored in at the N and S points. Make two more deep lines at E and W. Be sure to squeeze the lines back shut after each one is made. Then make deep lines between each of your N, S, E, and W points giving you eight deep lines. If you have room, you can make deep lines between each of the eight deep lines so that you end up with 16 deep lines.
Roll the cane gently to smooth the outside edges. Your cane is now ready to reduce as desired.
