Premo! Art Nouveau Inspired Liquid Pearl Necklace

Premo! Art Nouveau Inspired Liquid Pearl Necklace

The sinuous curves and tendrils so often seen in Art Nouveau jewelry inspired this piece. The alcohol ink tinted liquid pearl polymer, with its micro-crystaline-like surface, mimics some of the enamels and frosted glass that were common components of the jewelry of this period. DESIGNED BY MARI O'DELL

Project Instructions
Getting StartedPolymer clay may stain. CLAY MAY DAMAGE UNPROTECTED FURNITURE OR FINISHED SURFACES. DO NOT USE polymer clay on unprotected surfaces. We recommend working on the Sculpey clay mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Start with clean hands and work surface area. Knead clay until soft and smooth. For best results, clean your hands in between colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces together firmly. Bake on oven-proof glass or metal surface at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME. Wash hands after use. Baking should be completed by an adult.Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). Test temperature with oven thermometer for perfectly cured clay. For best results, condition all clay by running it through the Clay Conditioning Machine for several passes on the widest setting. Fold the clay in half after each pass and insert the fold side into the rollers first.
Using the piece of cardstock, create the shape you will use for the base of your focal piece. Using well conditioned White Pearl Premo!, make a sheet of clay about 1.5mm in thickness. Place the template on the sheet and cut around the template with the X-acto knife. Remove the template and gently smooth the edges of the focal base. Set aside.
Use some of the remaining clay , cut out a flower shape with the metal cutter. Gently drape the flower shape in one of the openings in the Hollow Beadmaker.
Make some very thin ropes of clay. These will be the curved tendrils on the surface of your focal base.Arrange the ropes in a pleasing manner on the base piece. Make holes for stringing.
Place the decorated base on the item which will create a gentle curve. Cure this piece and the flower for according to the directions in Step 1.
You can make spacer and other beads from the remaining white pearl Premo! . These beads can be placed on the Sculpey Bead rack for curing.
Pour a small amount of the PEARL LIQUID POLYMER into a container and add drop by drop of the alcohol inks until you reachyour desired color. Use a separate container for each color. Stir well
When the cured pieces are cool, apply the liquid polymer with a brush as you would a glaze. See how it slides over the shapes and settles.
Repeat with the flower shape and any beads you have made. Cure for 25 minutes at the recommended temperature.
Some metal pieces were added to the flower accent before attaching the accent to the base. Small holes were drilled and trimmed head pins inserted from the back of the flower. These were covered and secured with pieces of clay.To attach the accent flower to the base a small amount of liquid clay was applied to the surface where the flower was to be placed. A small ball of raw clay was applied to the space and a bit more liquid clay was added . Then the flower was pressed into the ball of raw clay and the focal piece was cured for another 25 minutes.
String the focal and finish with beads and a clasp.
