Sculpey Premo™ and Soufflé™ Lip Trinket Dish

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best
results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an
index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per
1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or
ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note
that the baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces
take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO
NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Roll out a 2 oz block of Soufflé Chili Pepper and free hand a lip shape of your choice about ¼ inch thick. I left enough room between the lips for some teeth to be visible. Mix together a pea size amount of Premo translucent and grape size amount of Premo white for teeth. Roll flat, and very thin about 1/32 inches.

Gently position the teeth where you want them, but don’t press the clay together yet.

Use a craft knife to trim the bottom of the teeth to be uniform. Trim away excess white clay. I smoothed the edges of the lips with my fingers to create a beveled edge.

Use a chiseled edge tool to add detail for the teeth. A silicone tool works best, a needle tool will cause the clay to have a rough edge.

Roll out ½ block of Premo black into a thin sheet, about 1/32 inch thick or a setting 4 on a clay conditioning machine.

Trace around the outside of the lips with a craft knife to remove excess black clay.

Roll out a long snake of Premo Black, enough to wrap around the whole perimeter of the lips. Attach around the edges, pressing lightly.

Trim excess black clay.

Add any details you’d like to the teeth. We added a gold tooth using gold foil. This should adhere without any liquid clay. We’ll seal the piece at the end.

Place popsicle sticks under the edges of your piece to raise the edges up slightly. Bake at 275 degrees for 40 mins.

Apply Sculpey gloss glaze over the top of your piece for a shiny coat. Synthetic hair paint brushes work best.

Congrats, you made yourself a quirky little trinket tray! Let the glaze dry for at least 24 hours before placing any jewelry or trinkets on it.
