Project Instructions
Your workspace:
Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Getting Started:
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:
Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per ¼" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.
Paint your frame. You will need two coats for good coverage. Set aside to dry completely.

Artist Tip: You can also mix equal parts Cocoa and Light Buttermilk paint to make a nice Tan color.
Cut out a template of your initial using your heavy weight craft paper. Initial should be approximately 4” x 2 ½”.
Roll ½ to ¾ of a bar of Turquoise clay in your Pasta Machine on the #1 setting. If you do not have a Pasta Machine, roll your clay out with a roller to a flatness of about 1/8” thick.
Lay your initial template on top of your clay and cut out your letter using a clay knife. Smooth edges with your finger. Place this on your baking surface and you will continue to work from there.
To decorate your letter, start by making Green leaves. Roll 8 to 10 balls of equal sized Green clay. The balls should be approximately ¼” in size. Shape these into teardrop shapes and then flatten into a leaf shape. Use your clay knife or toothpick to make veins in each leaf.Arrange these leaves on your initial in various places. They will look nice placed on the top and bottom corners and them some in the center. Group two leaves together in places and then just one in others. Press these firmly onto your initial.
Next make the roses. Roll a snake of Fuchsia clay that is 1/8” thick and 5” long. Cut five 1” pieces. Flatten one piece at a time and roll into a spiral so it looks like a rose. Squeeze the bottom a bit to make the edges fan out a little. Trim excess clay underneath to make it flat. Place roses next to some leaf groupings. In some spots you can put two roses next to each other, in others leave just one. Make sure to not fill all of your leaves because you will be adding some white flowers as well.
Roll 7 or so small balls of Fuchsia clay and place them near the roses (buds). Use the end of your paintbrush and press down in the centers.
Lastly make some White flowers. You will be making 3 flowers. For each you will need to roll 5 small balls (1/8”). Shape these into teardrop shapes and then flatten. Press these 5 petals together to form a flower shape. Use your clay knife or toothpick to make lines down the center of each petal. Place these flowers where you still have some leaf groupings with no flowers. You might put two flowers together in one spot and one by itself in another.
Press a few buttons and gems onto your initial. This is for spacing only. Please remove them before baking and then glue them into place once the clay has baked and cooled. You will also be gluing the smallest sized gems into the centers of your white flowers after it is baked.
Using a toothpick or the end of your paintbrush you can add dots of texture to your initial.
Once you are pleased with your initial you are ready to bake according to Step 1 above. Allow to cool completely.
To complete the frame, glue your initial onto the upper left corner of the frame. Arrange buttons and various sized gems around the opening on the frame. Once you are pleased with the arrangement, glue them onto the frame. You can also glue the gems onto your initial and gems into the center of the white flowers. Allow glue to dry overnight.
