Sculpey Bake Shop® Moon Phases Keychain

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 250 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 250°F (130 °C) for 20 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing; however please note that the baking/curing times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Clay for the bases Take a 2 oz Black bar and cut into 4 equal pieces. Then cut each of those into 2 equal pieces.

For the base hand out one of the black pieces to each child.

Each 2 oz bar of black = 8 bases.

For the moon pieces
Take a 2 oz. bar of White clay and cut into 4 equal pieces. Then cut each of those into 2 equal pieces.

Take a 2 oz. Black bar and cut into 4 equal pieces. Then cut each of those into 2 equal pieces.

Each kid gets 2 small black pieces and 2 small white pieces

Making the Base
Condition the piece of Black clay and roll it into a 3/4-inch ball. Flatten the 3/4-inch ball into a 1 1/2-inch disc about 1/8-inch thick. Set aside.

Making the light gray color
Take half of the bar of white clay and a half bar of black clay. Mix them together you have a light gray. Make a 1/2-inch light gray ball.

Making the dark gray color
Take a 1/4 bar of white clay and a bar of black clay. Mix them together until you get a dark gray new color and create 1/2 inch ball.

Cut the 1/2-inch light gray ball in half.

Using one white clay bar make 1/2-inch ball.

Divide the 1/2-inch white ball into three parts and one of the light gray ball halves into two parts.

Stack one white piece, then a light gray piece, then white, then light gray and then white.

Roll the ball to marble the white and light gray together. DO NOT OVER MIX. You want to see some white and some light gray.
Roll into a log – twisting to keep the marbling.
Cut off five pieces to make 3/16” balls

Making the dark gray marble
Take the other half of the light gray ball and divide it in half and take the dark gray ball and divide it into three parts.

Stack one dark gray piece, then a light gray piece, then dark gray, then light gray and then dark gray.

Roll the ball to marble the dark gray and light gray together. DO NOT OVER MIX. You want to see some dark gray and some light gray.
Roll into a log – twisting to keep the marbling.
Cut off five pieces to make 3/16” balls.

o Arrange your balls as follows:
Starting at 12:00 (the Third Quarter Moon)
Cut one ball of light gray/White in half and one ball of the dark gray/light gray in half. Flatten the half balls slightly. Place the White/Light gray half on the left and the dark gray half on the right. Smooth together with finger.

In the 1:00 position, take a light gray circle and flatten down on base. Cut a 1/3 of a dark gray ball, make a small snake and add to the outer edge of the white/gray ball. Smooth down with finger to create the Waning Gibbous Moon.

In the 3:00 position, take a light gray circle and flatten down to create the Full Moon.

In the 5:00 position, take a white/gray circle and flatten down. Take 1/3 of a dark gray circle and flatten on the inner edge of the light gray circle to create the Waxing Gibbous Moon.

In the 6:00 position take half a dark gray circle on the left and half a light gray circle on the right, smooth together with finger to create the First Quarter Moon.

In the 7:00 position, take a dark gray circle and flatten down. Take 1/3 of a light gray circle and flatten on the inner edge of the light gray circle to create the Waxing Crescent Moon.

In the 9:00 position take a dark gray circle and flatten down to create the New Moon.

In the 10:00 position take a dark gray circle and flatten down. Take 1/3 of a light gray circle and flatten on the Outer edge of the light gray circle to create the Waning Moon.

Once you are happy with the arrangement, gently press each moon phase onto the disc base.

Push a Screw Eye Pin into the disc. You can select which phase you want at the top.

Bake according to package directions.

Attach the key chain ring to the swivel hook, then attach the jump ring to the key chain ring chain and to the screw eye pin. Close the jump ring with the pliers.
