Project Instructions

Step 1

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking (also called Curing):

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake/cure clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 30 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions.
Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking/curing;
however please note that the baking/curing times may take longer as the glass
or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an
oven thermometer.

DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Step 2

Roll a ball of Toasty and taper one end, this will be the head.

Step 3

Roll out 4 thick tapered pieces of Toasty clay for the legs. Add a small amount of Ivory to each bottom.

Step 4

Roll a ball of Toasty into a large pill-like shape. This will be the body. Attach the legs you made on Step 3, carefully blend onto the body using the needle tool and the ball tool.

Step 5

If you’d like extra durability, add a small piece of craft wire, and use it to stick the head onto the body. Use Translucent Liquid Sculpey for additional support by adding a drop to the head before mounting it on the wire.

Step 6

Roll a ball of Toasty into a chubby raindrop shape and flatten, this will be the tail. Do the same in Ivory but smaller and press on top of the previous piece.

Step 7

With the point side facing up, press the tail you just made to the backside of your deer to give them a cute tail. Feel free to blend this in as well with your needle.

Step 8

Repeat Step 6 to make the two ears, but this time make them smaller. Lightly shade the Ivory clay with pink chalk pastels to give color to the ears as shown in the photo

Step 9

Attach each ear to the sides of the head and blend in using a needle tool. Add facial features in this step such as nose and eyes.

Step 10

Roll tapered snakes of Ivory clay. Cut, bend, and join to make antlers. Repeat this step again for the other antler. Place each antler on the sides of the head in front of the ears. Gently blend them onto the head being careful not to over blend.

Step 11

Dust Mica powder onto the antlers to give them a golden finish, if you get any onto the deer, simply clean with a cotton swab and rubbing alcohol. Proceed to do this to the rest of the body to get rid of dust particles before baking. Bake according to Step 1 above.

Step 12

Use a small dotting tool to make white paint dots along the head and back of the deer, feel free to make these dots in various sizes. If you’d like a glossy finish you can proceed to add a varnish, its not needed as the mica will stay in place unless handled directly.
