Bake Shop® Light™ Garden Snail

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven-Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.

Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

Roll a ball of Lime clay approx. 1” in diameter. Shape the ball into a long teardrop shape. At the rounded end, form two little antennae and then flatten the tail end. Curve the head upwards. Use your 5 in 1 tool to make a little happy mouth in the head.

To make the shell for your snail: Roll a thick snake of Orange clay that is approx. 3” long by 1/2” thick. Roll three very thin snakes of Lime clay that are 3” long. Press the very thin Lime snakes onto the orange snake. Twist the snake, roll on your surface and twist a bit more. Roll on your surface until the Lime clay becomes one with the Orange. It should be nice and smooth. Roll on your clay making surface until one end becomes smaller and pointed. Your snake should now look spiraled with Orange and Lime and be smaller and pointed at one end and gradually a bit wider at the other end.

Starting with the small pointy end, roll your snake into a spiral to make a shell shape. Press the shell onto the snail’s body.

Roll two tiny Dark Purple balls for the eyes. Press onto the head. Bake according to the directions in Step 1. Allow to cool. If you would like, your can use a little bit of White acrylic paint and paint white dots on the eyes.
