Original Sculpey® Granite Modern Art Coasters

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Work ‘n Bake Clay Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately.
Start with clean hands, unwrap and knead clay until soft and smooth, or condition by running clay though a Pasta Machine. We recommend using a designated machine for clay purposes only. When working with multiple colors, clean hands with soap and water or baby wipes (we have found that baby wipes work best) before switching colors. Shape clay, pressing pieces firmly together. Wash hands after use.

Baking:

Begin by preheating oven to 275 °F (130 °C). After you are done creating; for best results bake clay on an oven-proof surface such metal, aluminum foil, an index card or the Sculpey® Clay Mat at 275°F (130 °C) for 15 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) thickness according to package directions. Oven safe glass or ceramic surfaces are also acceptable for baking; however please note that the baking times may take longer as the glass or ceramic surfaces take longer to heat up. For best baking results, use an oven thermometer. DO NOT USE MICROWAVE OVEN. DO NOT EXCEED THE ABOVE TEMPERATURE OR RECOMMENDED BAKING TIME.

First you will need a 3” hexagon shape. Print the shape out onto paper and cut it out so you can use it for a template.

Sheet 4 ounces of the Granite Original Sculpey® through the pasta machine on the thickest setting. Cut out two 3” hexagon shapes from the clay using the Super Slicer. Set these aside for now.

Take the scrap clay from Step 3 and sheet it through the pasta machine on the thickest setting again. Sheet Black Sculpey III through the pasta machine on the thinnest setting possible. Tear pieces of the thin Black clay and place them randomly on the Granite clay. Roll over the clay with the Acrylic Clay Roller to press out bubbles.

Sheet the Granite Clay with the Black pieces on it through the pasta machine on the thickest setting. Lay the sheet flat and then fold over one end, but don’t completely cover up the Black pieces underneath.

Add more scraps of thin Black pieces to the side that was folded over.

Sheet the folded piece through the pasta machine on the thickest setting always pressing the folded end through first.

Fold the sheet again but make sure the black underneath is visible around the edges.

Keep folding the sheet and pressing it through the pasta machine on the thickest setting. Always fold the sheet off center so that it creates a random pattern of shades. When you are happy with the random shades, then don’t fold it anymore.

Cut out two more hexagon shapes from the marbled clay sheet using the same template from Step 3. Set these aside for now.

Take all the remaining scraps of the marbled Granite clay and sheet it through the pasta machine on the thickest setting. Paint a thin layer of gold acrylic paint over the clay and allow it to dry completely. This thin layer of paint will help the gold composite leaf to stick to the clay and also it will show through the cracks of the leaf to make the design more consistent.

When the paint is completely dry, place a piece of gold composite leaf on top of the paint and burnish out air bubbles with your fingertips.

Use the clay blade to cut very thin strips from the gold leaf/clay sheet. The strips can be straight or have an angle to them like super skinny triangles.

Position the strips on top of the marbled hexagons to see how you like the arrangement. I positioned them at different angles across the hexagon

Take one of the Granite hexagons from Step 3 and lay it beside the marbled hexagon with the gold pieces. Carefully slice along the gold pieces through the marbled hexagon. Remove the strips under the gold piece.

Re-assemble the marbled pieces and gold strips so that they are perfectly level on top of the plain Granite hexagon. Carefully roll over the top with the Acrylic Clay Roller to make sure the design is perfectly flat.

Trim the edges of the strips to match the sides of the hexagon shape.

Use the same techniques to create a second coaster. Bake the coasters following the baking instructions for Original Sculpey. When the coasters are completely cool, glue a cork or foam backing to each one with silicone glue. Carefully apply Sculpey Glossy Glaze to just the gold areas and allow to dry completely. When the coasters are in use, the glass should be placed on the cork or foam side. When they are not being used, the beautiful granite side can be displayed.
