Liquid Sculpey® Blurred Lines Coaster

Getting Started:

Please make sure your work area is covered and you are not working on an unprotected surface. We recommend working on the Sculpey® Oven Safe Work Mat, wax paper, metal baking sheet, or disposable foil. Uncured Liquid Polymer Clay may damage unprotected furniture or finished surfaces. Be sure to cover your crafting area appropriately. - Stir Liquid Sculpey® completely. Thin with Sculpey® Liquid Clay Softener as needed - Wash hands after use (we have found that baby wipes work best)

Baking:

• It is important to use oven thermometer when you bake the liquids so that you can ensure your oven is at the correct temperature. • Do not microwave the liquids. They must be baked in a Preheated oven at 275 ºF (130 ºC) for liquid colors and 300 ºF (149 ºC) for Clear – Do not exceed baking temperatures. • If your piece is less than 1/4” bake for 15 minutes. For thicker pieces that are 1/4” or above bake for 30 minutes. • If your liquid project has become yellowed or discolored in the oven, when you remake it, tent it by placing either – folding an index card in half and placing your project under it or by using aluminum foil over your project.

I did not thin the liquids for this project but used them as they are right from the bottle. Open each bottle of Liquid Sculpey® (LS) and stir well before using. Position the silicone coaster mold level on your work surface. Squirt a bead of Navy Metallic LS into just the rim portion of the coaster and just fill it half way up to start.

Dip the tip of the Needle Tool into the LS and find the outer rim corner of the coaster. Drag the tip of the Needle Tool following the outer rim corner to make sure no air bubbles are trapped in this circular corner.

Angle the tip of the Needle Tool into the inner rim and follow this inside corner all the way around to make sure any air bubbles are released from this inner edge too. We want to make sure that the crisp corners are bubble free to get the best possible outcome. Tap the mold gently on your work surface to release any more air bubbles.

Wipe your Needle Tool clean with paper towel and set it aside. Next, fill the rim of the coaster mold all the way up so that the Navy Metallic is flush to the inside flat area.

Flood the inside flat area of the coaster with Translucent Turquoise LS.

We want the Translucent Turquoise to just touch the Navy Metallic edge. You will notice that when the two colors touch they will want to mix together slightly and this is okay. Bake the coaster immediately following the baking instructions for LS.

Here’s how the coaster will look after the first baking. You can see that the Translucent Turquoise has become a richer color.

Gently flex the silicone coaster mold to remove the coaster. If there are any rough edges along the bottom edge of the coaster shape, feel free to trim these away with sharp scissors. It is very common with molded items that there is a rough edge where the liquid met the mold - this is created by surface tension between the two materials.

Flip the coaster shape over so the rim is now facing up. If you like you can put the LS coaster back into the mold but make sure it is rim up from now on. Next we will add the design to the top side of the coaster.

Add a free style zig zag line across the coaster top in Navy Metallic. Try to get the lines to go all the way to the raised rim edge.

Make another zig zag pattern across the Navy Metallic lines with Gold LS. Also try to get these lines to go all the way to the raised rim edge.

Please note that I put my coaster rim edge up back in my mold so that it would be supported during the next baking. This is not necessary. Fill in all the empty spaces with Translucent Turquoise. The Translucent Turquoise is very thin and will naturally fill in the spaces. You can also help fill in any little gaps by using the tip of the Needle Tool to draw the liquids into place. Bake the coaster again immediately following the baking instructions for LS

If you used the mold again to support your art during the last baking, allow it to cool completely before flexing it out of the mold. If you want the surface of the coaster to shine, you can add heat from a heat gun to bring the finished piece up to a glossy shine. Place the coaster right side up on a heat protective surface. Turn the heat gun on high and use a circular motion over the surface of the clay to apply heat holding the heat approximately 4” from the surface. Turn the heat off as soon as the clay starts to shine.
