Personalized keychains let you express your unique style. Whether you are making a keychain for yourself, a friend or a loved one, your creativity will shine through with our polymer clay keychain craft. Use our directions to create a polymer clay keychain.
How to Make Keychains
To make keychains, you will need:
- A rolling pin.
- A cookie sheet.
- Jump and keychain rings.
- Cookie cutters.
- Parchment paper.
- Polymer clay.
- Toothpicks.
- Pliers.
Follow these directions to make a keychain:
1. Preheat Your Oven and Separate the Clay
Preheat the oven to 275 degrees Fahrenheit. Pull the clay apart into several chunks, each weighing about one ounce. You can use one or multiple colors together.
2. Mash All the Clays Together
For a marbled look, make snakes out of all of the colors, twist the snakes together, fold, twist again and keep repeating until you have the marbled look you like! If you want a uniform or solid appearance, you can move onto step three without combining colors.
3. Roll Out and Cut the Clay
Roll the clay out on a flat surface with the rolling pin. Then, use the cookie cutter to cut out your shape. You can also use letter-shaped cookie cutters and outline your initials.
Make sure your shapes are relatively small, at about one to two inches in diameter. A small keychain will hang safely from your keys and complement other accessories.
4. Make the Hole
Gently push the toothpick into the top of your clay to create a hole. You will attach the jump ring to this hole later.
5. Bake the Clay
Set your clay creations on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper. Bake the clay for 20 minutes, then take it out of the oven and let it cool.
6. Put the Shape on the Jump Ring
Pry open a jump ring using pliers. Be sure to open it wide enough to hook it into the shape. Once you connect your clay, open two more jump rings and attach them one by one to create a chain. You should have a chain with three links secured to your clay.
7. Attach to the Keychain
Take the jump ring and carefully attach it to the keychain ring. Connect your polymer clay creations to the keychain.
8. Accessorize the Keychain
Once you finish, you might want to add some pizzazz to your keychain. You can decorate the clay with paint or other materials, such as glitter, rhinestones or feathers. You can express limitless creativity for your keychain.
