Cool and Easy Geometric Vase
(Did I mention it was easy?)
Design by Syndee Holt

Materials:

  • Premo! Sculpey in a variety of colors, conditioned and ready to use. I used Cadmium Yellow, Orange, Cadmium Red, Purple, Ultramarine Blue, and Green - one 2-oz. package of each.
  • Several 2-oz. packages of Black Premo! Sculpey, depending on the size of your vase. I used about 2-1/2 packages for my vase.
  • Scratch Art Texture Sheets in a variety of patterns, OR use the SAME pattern throughout!
  • Round cutters, cookie cutters
  • Sculpey Super Slicer clay blade
  • Inexpensive glass vase (kind that flowers are delivered in work well!)
  • Clay dedicated pasta machine Premo! Sculpey
  • Directions

Create your Skinner Blend. For the rainbow blend, lay your triangles in the pattern indicated in the photo, following the left to right arrangement of colors.

Split the yellow triangle down the middle and put one half on the other side of the green to create a rectangle.

Fold the blend in half from TOP TO BOTTOM.

Run through your pasta machine, folded portion first. Continue folding in the SAME direction and running through the machine. It takes about 20-25 repetitions of these two steps -- don't give up!

The final blend should look something like this:

Now carefully run this through the pasta machine to make it thinner (#3 on the pasta machine. Make it thinner, but don't spread out the colors.

Now, cover your vase in a thinnish layer of black clay. You can do this in sections and blend the section joints by pressing a section of the texture sheets randomly over the surface. You don't need any glue or adhesive agent as the clay will stick to the non-porous surface of the glass pretty well. Set aside once the entire surface is covered.

Cut your shape and trim the same shape out of a thin layer of black clay for a backing. This adds dimension and gives your colored pieces the illusion of "floating on the black surface of the vase.

Lay your shape face down on a texture sheet and texture lightly. The texture adds some complexity to the design as well as disguising any surface blemishes (like fingerprints) in the clay.

Apply the clay shape to the vase and start building your design. Feel free to overlap the shapes from time to time!

I use the smaller scraps of the blend to make snakes or coild of blended clay for the design.

Bake the vase according to package directions and allow to cool in the oven before removing. We recommend that you calibrate your oven to a reliable 275 degrees F (130 degrees C) using an external thermometer. Bake 30 minutes per 1/4" of thickness. You can bake longer, NOT HOTTER!!!
