Dad's Custom Poker Chips
Created by syndee holt

Add a couple of circle cutters and a bamboo skewer to our indispensable Sculpey clay and you can make Dad his own set of customized poker chips! Sculpey III adds just the right amount of color, weight and that perfect "thunk" sound of the chips.

Supplies:

  • Sculpey III – Sunset, French Blue, Granny Smith – 4 oz will make 6 chips
  • Circle cutters – mine are 1-3/4 inch for the outside and 1-1/4 inch for the inside circle. They are part of a set of nesting circle cutters from a kitchen store.
  • Bamboo skewer
  • Something to make the clay flat – an acrylic roller or clay-dedicated pasta machine
  • Small stamp for other side of the chip (optional)
  • Computer paper or unlined paper for your work surface
  • Small dish of water

Instructions:

Cut the clay package in half lengthwise and lightly knead the clay in your hand for just a moment.

Set the clay on your work surface and roll out with your acrylic roller to ¼ inch thickness. If you are using a pasta machine, make 2 sheets on your widest setting and stack them together.

Cut out as many circles of the clay as you can from your sheet using the larger cutter and dipping your cutter into the bowl of water before each cut. The water will act as a mold release.

Use the smaller cutter to press lightly into the center of each circle to create the center pattern.

The tip of the bamboo skewer will add the texture to the outer circle of the clay.

Make sure you work both sides of the chip!

The back of the skewer, pressed lightly into the clay, will create your Dad’s initials for that custom effect!

You can press his initials into both sides or use a small stamp to decorate the opposite side of the chip.

Place the chips on a sheet of unlined paper so that the chips don’t touch. Place the piece of paper on your baking tray and bake the chips about 20 minutes at 275 degrees in a preheated oven.

All done! Dad’s poker face will break into a big smile when you present him with his custom made poker chips!
